Below are a set of data collection instructions that will be provided with the sampling kits. Check them out and post any questions you may have.
Stream Criteria: above the line of continuous trees, contains flowing water, small to moderately sized (shallow, small and slow enough to safely sample), outside of Provincial or Federal Parks land
**DO NOT COLLECT FISH**
**SAMPLE ONE STREAM PER KIT**
Invertebrate sampling instructions
- Locate stream
- Place net into stream so that it is touching the streambed
- With your hand or a stick, disturb the streambed directly upstream of the net to dislodge invertebrates and catch them in the net as they flow downstream
- Move net to a new location within the stream and repeat (optional)
- Once you have filled approximately half of the net, dump the contents of the net into the sandwich container with a small amount of water
- Check out your cool bugs (optional)
- Pour out the majority of the water and pour the sample into one of the bags provided
- Pour entire bottle of isopropanol into the bag
- Roll top of bag over itself and fold in ties to secure bag
- Place bag inside second bag provided and close tightly
Stream data collection
- Use marked string (marked at 0.25 m intervals) to estimate and record stream width and depth at sampling location
- Record location data – if coordinates and elevation are not available, provide any relevant location information that may assist in locating the stream in the future (reference to trail system, cardinal direction or paces to significant landmark etc.)
- Record any additional notes (signs of disturbance, streamside vegetation info etc.)
- Record date and time
- Record your contact information (optional)
